Pure Michigan’s South Haven

There’s nothing more soothing than the sound of waves lapping along the shore. I’ve been a Midwesterner all my life but I’m drawn to the water like a moth to light. Luckily I’m pretty close to Lake Michigan and have taken many photographic journeys up the Lake Michigan coast in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan.

There are seven lighthouses from Michigan City to Muskegon and I’ve had the pleasure of photographing all of them in various seasons. My absolute favorite though is the South Haven South Pier Light. Don’t get wrong, South Haven has an incredibly charming downtown area full of boutique shops and restaurants, but my inspiration is the lighthouse.

Google Maps: it’s that easy

Creating a custom Google Map is a great way to enhance itineraries, attraction and hotel listings, special events and so much more. Plus Google made it very easy to create and embed these maps.

Go to the “My Maps” tab and create a title and description for your new map. All you have to do now is find, drop or drag placemarks and draw lines. You can customize the icon for the placemark as well as adding live links and images via html.

Flickr is always a great resource for images. Search within the Creative Commons to find images that can be used commercially. You can find the html under the “Share This” tab for each photo.…

St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse

When I need to get away from things, I usually end up on a short photography road trip. It’s the easiest way for me to escape from the normal routine and stress.  Some of my favorite spots are the Michigan lighthouses along Lake Michigan. Most of them are only a few hours away and make the perfect day trip.

My most recent trip was to St. Joseph, Michigan. The North Pier Light can be reached on the north side of the St. Joseph River but you can get equally amazing views of it from the south side of the river as well. …
