Promote Tourism. Vote Milwaukee.

There’s a really good chance to bring #SoMeT to the Midwest! And you can help!

What: #SoMeT is the Social Media Tourism Symposium and, quite frankly, it’s the BEST tourism conference I’ve ever attended. There’s great educational content, outstanding networking and all around fun.

Why do you need to vote? This conference is like no other. YOU get to decide where the location will be.

When? Today, starting at 11am CST. You have until 11pm CST and you get one vote per network ID so vote at work and then again at home tonight.

How? Go to the Milwaukee voting page: t.co/OAUg6A11. VOTE MILWAUKEE!

Where? That, my friends, is up to you. VOTE MILWAUKEE today and then again on Monday (April 2-3) when it’s paired against St. Louis. And hopefully we’ll have another chance to VOTE MILWAUKEE on April 11-12, selecting Milwaukee as the top choice for #SoMeT.

Thanks for you help! Promote Tourism. VOTE MILWAUKEE.…

Everyday Heroes

Reflections of cloudsThere’s something amazing about twitter. It’s so easy to find and connect with people who share similar interests with you. And every once in a while, you’ll create lifelong friendships and find everyday heroes too. A few new names were added to my list of heroes this weekend.

Betsy Decillis and I went on #geekcation this past weekend. We had our first #geekcation, May 2010, in Chicago when we worked on acquiring Foursquare badges. This #geekcation was a little different as it was based on a visit to AJ Bombers, a mecca for social media geeks.…

3 things you must do before summer ends

The days are getting shorter, kids are going back to school and some trees are beginning to drop leaves…summer is definitely on the way out. Take time in the next few weekends to celebrate the end of summer by doing what we do best – traveling! 1. Be a tourist in your town: We live…

Three Little Words: In Real Life

I didn’t think it was possible to fit this much awesomeness into one month but I have been lucky enough to coordinate schedules with three fantastic tourism professionals (and incredible friends) this month. All IRL. In Real Life.

The series of meet-ups begin with Vicky Soderberg. Her twitter bio states “Creative collaboration with communities to preserve sense of place, strengthen tourism & enhance economic development” but as if that wasn’t enough, Vicky is also social media rockstar and a great friend. I can’t wait to meet her for the first time!

Mid-August is a meet-up with Katie Cook, an amazing friend and super savvy tourism geek. Need html help? Katie’s got you covered. Need to complain about geeky stuff? Katie again. I’m privileged to work with Katie professionally and even though we joke about it, I actually do miss her when one of us is out of the office for a few days.

And at the end of the month will be an epic tourism tweet-up at AJ Bombers with Betsy Decillis. Especially with all of our similarities, it’s almost incomprehensible that Betsy and I have only met up twice before. We’re #tourismchat partners in crime and constantly tease about our #catholicguilt, which is always in the form of a hashtag. Even when not on twitter. Only on rare occasions do we not communicate daily in some fashion. It’s been mentioned that we share the same brain but even more importantly, according to this amazing infographic Betsy found, we both have geeky grins. And that says it all.…

Postcards

I’m fascinated with antique postcards. Not so much for the image on the front, although most of them are pretty nice, but more so for the conversation written on the back. A few months ago I started my collection and even though it’s taken a while, it has now doubled in size…to 5 total postcards.

I went to the Harbert Antique Mall on the Red Arrow Highway in Harbert, Michigan today. I was here last November so this was my second time shopping at this store. They have a good amount of antiques and their prices seem fairly reasonable. They still had the china cabinet of my dreams but since I first saw it, I bought a nice vintage piece at a local resale shop for much less.

Today’s purchase of three vintage postcards totaled $9. You can see more more images of these cards in my Flickr set. The first card was postmarked Oct 13, 1908, and features a sunset on Lake Mitchell in Cadillac, Mich.…
